WHERE IT STARTED
I thought I was living the dream
I had been leaping my whole career. Air force F-16 commander, then engineer at Intel, then technical sales, product management, VP of technical operations. So when I decided to leave it all and start a tech company with a friend, it felt like the natural next jump.
We raised eight hundred thousand dollars from investors. At my goodbye party I told everyone about the company we were building.
I was proud.
I had no idea it was about to blow up in my face.
THE FALL
"My co-founder took the money, pushed me out of the business, and I was left with nothing."
No job. No salary. No startup. No investment. And an ego somewhere down the drain.
— I had just told everyone about this startup. Now I had to explain what happened.
— "What do you do, Ilana?" "Are you looking for a job?" "Wait, you don't know?"
— I couldn't sleep at night. I couldn't get up in the morning knowing I had no purpose.
Looking back, it was the hardest season of my life. It was also, though I could only admit this much later, the best thing that ever happened to me.
THE CLIMB BACK
So I asked the question that changed everything
What do I actually want to do, and how do I get there? Answering it forced me to build a repeatable system for reinvention, one I had to use on myself first.
Since then I started a tech company and sold it, became an investor in more than eighty companies, joined boards, became a general partner at a venture network, advised some of the biggest accelerators in the world, wrote for Forbes, and became an international keynote speaker.
And I made a promise: to do everything I could to help other driven professionals figure out what's next, craft their story, build their reputation, and leap to the career they actually want.

What started as rebuilding my own career became helping other people reinvent theirs.
